Key points
- 1-Wire sensors are addressable, so several can share one bus and one controller can monitor several parameters. 1-Wire suits shorter distances and is popular in home and office automation, and can be used in industrial systems with appropriate design.
- RS-485 (EIA-485) also supports several sensors on one bus, handles relatively long distances and suits electrically noisy industrial environments.
- Both interfaces have specific wiring requirements — read the sensor documentation for long-term, trouble-free operation. All sensors can be firmware-updated over their working interface.
- Detectors give on/off status through relay or open-collector outputs and connect to controller digital inputs in dry-contact mode; they are either unpowered or powered from the monitored side.
